The goals of the project are as follows

Our first aim is to describe parents’ perceptions of mental health care, shelter settings, parenting while experiencing homelessness, and child emotional and behavioral health. Qualitative semi-structured interviews and quantitative measures will identify family’s intersectional (race, immigration-status, and language) needs and inform how to tailor family-level interventions and systems-level approaches to improving care tailored to minoritized (Black, Latinx, and Spanish speaking) families with young children living in temporary housing. Our second aim is to describe homeless provider perceptions of the needs of minoritized families experiencing homelessness. Via semi-structured interviews, we will elicit providers’ perceptions of families’ needs for parenting support, child mental health, mental health service availability, and structural barriers to care (i.e., lack of culturally and linguistically competent care) within temporary housing. We will also gather information about providers’ knowledge of available services in Spanish, trauma-informed care, early childhood development, and culturally sensitive parenting practices. The qualitative interviews and knowledge assessments will inform how to best tailor provider training and system-level adaptations to improve the environment for minoritized families living in temporary housing.

Here are some preliminary findings of the study!
